Creating holes in rectangular objects in Sketchup

I had a hard time finding a simple way creating holes in rectangular objects or a cylinder and eventually attach a flange to it. The solution is quite simple. It will work with cylinders as too. Unfortunately  you can’t see the tools that I’ve selected in the tutorial below as Mac OS changes the curser while using the screenshot feature (shift+cmd+4).I hope it’s still comprehensive.

 

  1. First draw a rectangular box and extrude it to the right dimensions. I use a 100/100/100 millimetre box for demonstration. A cylinder would work in the same way. CheckScreen Shot 2015-07-13 at 17.00.52
  2. Use the offset toll to create a second box on the top surface and push it down by 80 millimetresScreen Shot 2015-07-13 at 17.01.35
  3. Create some guide lines to position the circle for the hole and create the circle on the surface on the side positioned towards youScreen Shot 2015-07-13 at 17.02.32
  4. Now use the push tool and push the surface of the circle towards the inner space. For this operation to complete it is crucial to use the edge of the inner box as reference point. Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 17.43.07
  5. The hole is there! Lets continue and attach a simple flange. Use the offset tool again and draw an additional circle.Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 17.46.11

  7. Now select the outer flange circle and move it back towards the box to chamfer the flange by staying aligned to the green axis to achieve a symmetrical result.Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 17.16.28
